We hate to say it, but the end is near. The penultimate episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty dropped on Wednesday, forcing the fandom to come to grips with the unfortunate fact that there’s only one episode left to air.
But rather than harp on what we don’t know — like if Belly (Lola Tung) and Conrad (Chris Briney) will actually get back together and live happily ever after — let’s turn our attention to what we do know. We know that Belly is living it up in Paris — that she’s scored her dream apartment and has plans of attending graduate school. She even dates an artsy boy named Benito (Fernando Cattori), though it’s not clear whether she’s still seeing him by the end of the episode. Episode 10, after all, takes place over the course of about seven months, beginning in November and ending sometime in June.
Another thing we know? The Summer I Turned Pretty fandom has set the internet ablaze with thoughts following Wednesday’s episode. Below, we’ve sifted through a bunch of them and have emerged with three overarching topics of discussion.
Belly and Benito: Do we love or hate it?!
Belly and Benito find themselves alone together on Christmas Eve. Then, on New Year’s Eve, emboldened by her bestie, Taylor Jewel (Rain Spencer), Belly kisses Benito at midnight. We then see B and B in bed together, and later find out that Benito’s even invited Belly to Mexico for his grandmother’s 80th birthday.
So how does the fandom feel about Belly’s fling with Benito? Responses seem to be mixed. There is a subset of fans that's enraged Belly has moved on so fast, especially after she ruined the relationship between two brothers, both of whom are still in love with her. Fans were unimpressed with what Belly had written back to Conrad after the months of love letters he had sent her.
“Is she finding herself or finding another man,” one fan commented on a TikTok video. Another added, “That girl did not give one thought into that postcard.”
But not everyone is upset. Several fans find Belly and Benito’s fling to be exactly what she needs right now. She’s by no means in love with him, but she’s having fun. Isn’t that what your early 20s are all about?
“This might be an unpopular opinion but I kinda like that they gave belly and benito’s relationship more substance it shows she’s open to the idea of having something someone else but conrad will always be her soulmate at the end of the day,” a fan wrote on X. “It’s huge for her to be with someone outside of the brothers and I think they did a good job of showing that she is not shut off but is not really that invested either 😭 just a fun little moment.”
Are we rooting for Jeremiah and Denise?
Fans predicted this possible romance early on. Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Denise (Isabella Briggs) know each other from his dad’s company, though their friendship seems to have deepened in the months after the wedding was called off. In Episode 10, we see Jeremiah move in with Denise, an initial weeklong arrangement that’s turned into a month and counting.
The two of them bond during the holidays, when Jeremiah affirms that they’ve become pretty close friends and Denise, seeing how lonely he is, invites him to spend Christmas at her grandmother’s home.
Fans were also quick to notice how much kinder Jeremiah is in Episode 10. Suddenly, he’s not so insufferable. Save for some fans who believe Denise deserves better than a guy like Jere, others are pretty on board with the idea of them getting together.
On TikTok, one fan commented, “This relationship will be an eyeopener for Jere, because it will let him see how real and natural love can be, instead of how it was with Belly.” Another fan chimed in, “I wish they had started developing them in the middle of the season and not in the last episode it feels so rushed. But they do have chemistry.”
Is a 'Bonrad' endgame inevitable?
If the final minutes of Episode 10 are any indication, the future looks bright for Bonrad shippers. At the hair salon, Belly asks for a chic little bob, and her stylist asks what her birthday plans are. Intercut with this scene is one of Conrad literally en route to Paris, presumably to surprise her for her birthday. We can assume, based on our knowledge of when Belly’s birthday is, that this entire sequence takes place in June.
Fan-recorded footage of Tung and Briney filming together in Paris seems to corroborate the theory that their characters will, in fact, reunite after all this time. Tung, for instance, appears to be rocking a French bob, while Briney looks to be in the same outfit Conrad wears on the plane to Paris. So what does this mean? It seems all signs point to Conrad immediately hopping off the plane and running to find Belly.
