The New York Mets came into their series vs. the Tampa Bay Rays with a six-game winning streak, but the latter club swept them at home to halt their momentum. The Rays won 9-0 on Sunday to complete the first three-game series sweep of the Mets this season.
However, New York is still one game ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the best record in the NL and 2.5 games in front of the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East. It will try to maintain those leads without ace pitcher Kodai Senga (hamstring) for now, as he's on the 15-day IL.
Luckily for the Mets, they got good news about another hurler on Monday, via MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.
"Left-hander Brooks Raley will begin a minor league rehab assignment tomorrow with Class A St. Lucie," he reported.
"This will be an extended rehab assignment, lasting several weeks if not the entire 30 days," he continued. "But it appears Raley will be an option for the Mets in July."
Raley made just eight appearances last season, going 1-0 with no runs allowed and nine strikeouts. The 6-foot-3-inch, 200-pounder went 1-2 with a 2.80 ERA over 66 outings in 2023, his first year with New York.
Raley has also pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, and Rays. The veteran is 6-10 with a 4.04 ERA over 227 career appearances, including five starts. He's also 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA over 15 playoff outings.
Next up for the Mets is a road series against the Atlanta Braves.
