Mariners outscore Seahawks on polarized day for Seattle sports

The Seattle Mariners had a very good Sunday.

The Seahawks? Not so much. And they got outscored by their baseball counterparts, 18-13.

On the first Sunday of the NFL season, the Mariners played an early road game against the Atlanta Braves. Cal Raleigh continued his power tear with his 53rd home run of the season to further etch his name into the record books as the Mariners cruised to an 18-2 win.

The win moved the Mariners within 2.5 games of the first-place Houston Astros in the AL West and put them 1.5 games ahead of the the Texas Rangers for the AL's final wild-card spot. It was a good day all around for the Mariners.

Back in Seattle, things weren't so great for the home team. The Seahawks hosted the San Francisco 49ers in an intra-division NFC West matchup to start the season.

The Seahawks led in the fourth quarter, but gave up a go-ahead touchdown late. They had a chance to score with a late drive into the red zone. But Nick Bosa strip-sacked first-year Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, and the 49ers recovered to effectively end the game.

The result was a 17-13 49ers win and an 0-1 start to the season for the Seahawks with a loss in the division.

It marked a disappointing end to the day for the home fans in Seattle. But they can look to the Mariners' place in the MLB playoff race for solace.
