Donnarumma features in Italy’s nine-goal thriller with Israel

Gianluigi Donnarumma featured for the entirety of Italy’s 5-4 win over Israel on Monday evening.

It was Italy’s second 2026 World Cup qualifying match of the September international break, following their 5-0 win over Estonia.

And the new City shot stopper captained his national team again, this time in a dramatic outing at the Nagyerdei Stadion in Hungary.

Israel took a surprise lead when Manuel Locatelli, unfortunately, put the ball in the back of his own net on 16 minutes.

It then took Italy some time to find an equaliser, but it finally came in the form of a clinical strike from Moise Kean just prior to half-time.

Israel regained their lead early in the second half through Dor Peretz, with Kean on hand to draw his nation level again, before Matteo Politano and Giacomo Raspadori fired Italy into a two-goal lead with just under 10 minutes remaining.

But, another mistake at the back for Italy saw Alessandro Bastoni’s miskicked clearance fire past Donnarumma, an impossible error to save.

With one minute of regular time left to play, Peretz made it 4-4, but Italy refused to see their efforts thwarted.

Almost immediately after the restart, Sandro Tonali placed a low effort into the far right corner to restore Italy’s lead and gain a valuable three points for Gennaro Gattuso’s side, who sit second in Group I with nine points from four games.

That completes Italy’s international fixtures for the month. Donnarumma will now look to meet up with his new teammates ahead of the Manchester derby this weekend.
