The Alabama Crimson Tide will have a new starting quarterback in 2025; however, it remains unclear who that will be at this time. Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell are all vying for the job, and Tide fans are fully aware of the pros and cons of each option.
CBS Sports' Josh Pate made an appearance on the "Crain & Company Podcast" to preview Alabama's 2025 college football season, and the topic of Simpson was discussed and how the 22-year-old signal-caller would work as the team's starter.
"When you have Ty Simpson at quarterback, the best way I can put that is," Pate began. "I think you should expect him to play within the system more than Jalen Milroe did."
Now a member of the Seattle Seahawks after being selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Milroe passed for 2,844 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season.
Simpson doesn't have that second dimension on the ground.
"I think what may surprise people is I've had folks on the defensive side at Alabama tell me (Simpson) is low-key more difficult to defend in scramble-mode than Milroe. Milroe was a way better runner. Milroe is an incredible freak athlete, but a lot of times, when you would see Jalen Milroe run the ball, it wasn't within the construct of the play itself. It was just, 'Let's go, because I can.'"
Milroe rushed for 726 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, showing his prowess as a dual-threat quarterback.
"Ty Simpson is a guy who is, although he is a first-year starter, not a first-year player, and I think you can trust him to play within the confines of the system. Now it's important to have proper expectations. I don't expect the guy to be a Heisman contender. I expect the guy to be a good, solid player who executes well. You know, on the high end, we're talking about like the Stetson Bennett kind of arc of expectation, where you know if you do it perfectly, hey, you're still in the Heisman conversation," Pate elaborated.
Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb appeared to name Simpson as the team's frontrunner at quarterback.
Alabama and its offense will have to hit the ground running to open the season as they kick off on the road against the Florida State Seminoles on Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
