Giants Make Justin Verlander Decision After Rafael Devers Trade

The San Francisco Giants stunned the baseball world by trading for Boston Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers on Sunday evening.

Buster Posey's squad will take on the eight years and $255 million left on Devers' contract in addition to sending pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison along with No. 4 prospect James Tibbs III.

The move has been likened to the controversial February trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Lakers in its suddenness and impact.

In the aftermath of the Devers news, however, the Giants provided an optimistic update on future Hall of Fame pitcher Justin Verlander.

The Giants announced that Verlander would rejoin the rotation on Wednesday for the final game of a three-game set against the Guardians.

Verlander suffered a pectoral injury in May, with his last start coming on May 18 against the Athletics. His Giants tenure has had its highs and lows, with the three-time Cy Young allowing three runs or fewer in his last six starts from April 20 to May 18.

Verlander has yet to collect a win in 2025, but will hopefully turn the tables on his season with a full bill of health.

While the Giants did get one of the best designated hitters in the league, their pitching depth did take a hit, so the return of Verlander is surely welcome.

Verlander figures to slot in as the Giants' No. 3 starter behind Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, ahead of reliever-turned-starter Landen Roupp and Hayden Birdsong.

Ultimately, the Devers trade, along with Verlander's return, is bringing excitement back to San Francisco.
