German teams out? Supercomputer picks Champions League favourites

It’s finally starting again today! The Champions League is back, bringing with it many familiar faces and some newcomers. It promises to be an exciting season.

Just as eagerly awaited are the annual predictions about which team has the best chances of lifting the trophy—the “Henkelpott”—next May at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. Once again, Opta Analyst has fired up the supercomputer, and the results are unlikely to please German fans.

With a win probability of 4.3 percent, Bayern still come out on top among German teams. For the other German participants, things look even bleaker: Dortmund has just a 0.9 percent chance, and Leverkusen only 0.7 percent—virtually no chance at all of winning the title.

Only three teams reached a double-digit percentage. While the current CL winners from Paris have a win probability of 12.1 percent, Arsenal stands at 16 percent.

Liverpool has the best chances of claiming the coveted CL trophy.

The Reds spent almost half a billion on new players in the last transfer window, and according to Opta Analyst, these investments are at least paying off in the Champions League.
