Sydney Sweeney's new movie 'The Housemaid' releases cryptic new teasers

Sydney Sweeney’s upcoming film The Housemaid is giving audiences a sneak peek at what’s to come with a series of creepy teasers. It’s building the mystery around one of the most highly anticipated book adaptations of the year.

Based on the 2022 Freida McFadden novel of the same name, the Paul Feig-directed thriller stars Sweeney as Millie Calloway, a young woman who lands a job as a live-in maid to a wealthy suburban family. What Millie doesn’t know is that they only look perfect from the outside — especially when it comes to wife and mom Nina Winchester, played in the film by Amanda Seyfried.

The videos dropped earlier this week on The Housemaid TikTok account tease what’s hidden behind the closed doors of the Winchester house. The first teaser, released on Sept. 12, shows a gate to what is presumably the Winchester mansion opening. We then hear Seyfried’s Nina greeting Sweeney and telling her to “please call me Nina.”

A second teaser, posted on the same day, takes us inside the house, to a closed white door. “I don’t know what I’d do without you,” Seyfried says. A frightened Sweeney, however, then says, “I do not want to go back.” A third video, of a brown door, features Seyfried saying: “I want you to feel safe here.” And a fourth video returns to the gates, with Seyfried noting: "I have a really good feeling about this, Millie."

The teaser that dropped on Sept. 15 gives us a wider view of the house, turning the Winchester mansion into a dollhouse-like version of the home Millie finds herself working in. In the upstairs bedroom, Seyfried’s Nina is held by husband Andrew, played by It Ends With Us star Brandon Sklenar. The couple’s daughter, Cecilia (Indiana Elle), is also in a bedroom on the same floor. Meanwhile, outside trimming hedges is Enzo, the groundskeeper, who is played by 365 Days and Another Simple Favor actor Michele Morrone.

Coming in the front door, wearing blue jeans, is Sweeney’s character Millie. Just as she arrives, the tagline for the movie appears: “Discover what lies behind closed doors.” Emphasis on the lies, of course!

Whether or not you’ve read the book, which went viral on TikTok after its release in 2022, there are bound to be some surprises in store. Seyfried shared at this year’s CinemaCon back in April that she will “never forget” how playing Nina made her feel.

“I went to places I never thought I’d go to,” the Mamma Mia! star said, per Deadline. “The surprises in my own experience in playing this character were life-affirming and career-affirming. We reached places I never could go as an actor. We played some wacky shit. And weren’t expecting to.”

In an interview with People, Sweeney said that Millie is exactly "the type of character I love to play: complex, strong and with a little something up her sleeve.”

“I can’t wait for fans to see how hard we all worked to bring The Housemaid to life,” she said.
