The Chicago Cubs clinched a postseason berth last week for the first time since 2020, and are now playing spoiler by beating the Mets in the first two games of a crucial three-game set for New York. Chicago is likely going to be the top wild-card in the NL, which sets them up for three home games in the wild-card round.
However, there is still one order of business for the Cubbies as they set their sights on October, and that is Kyle Tucker's health. Well, on Thursday, a major update was provided on Tucker's status and when he will return.
Kyle Tucker aiming for Friday return
Cubs' reporter Maddie Lee reported that manager Craig Counsell said the hope is that Kyle Tucker will return to the Cubs lineup, and "we're trending towards that" being the case.
The Cubs will be entering the final series of the regular season on Friday when they take on their rival, the St. Louis Cardinals, who have already been eliminated from playoff contention.
Tucker has been nursing a calf injury that has had him sidelined for about two weeks now, and it will be interesting to see how he's used in the final series. As noted, the Cubs, barring losing their last four games, will likely be the top Wild Card.
If the Cubs want to win the NL Pennant, they will need Tucker at full strength and to be a postseason hero. His production has fallen off since the beginning of the season, but he's still tallied 22 home runs, 73 RBIs, and is a well-above-average hitter.
Counsell also added in his time with the media that he told Tucker to keep his effort level at around "80-90%" in situations where he does not need to exert maximum effort.
If there's anyone who can find their offensive prowess in short notice like this, it's Kyle Tucker, and Chicago will be counting on it.
