- The game slowed down in the second half, even on Harry Kane’s goal. Bayern are in fantastic form, sitting alone atop the Bundesliga table.
- Lennart Karl brings such a unique energy to the game. It’s not because he’s 17 years old either. He just doesn’t care that he’s playing with a squad full of world class players. He relentlessly attacks and presses his opponent. Bayern fans should expect this attitude to become infectious within the locker room for years to come.
- Conversely, Nicolas Jackson looked tentative and unsure of his purpose on the pitch. He clearly has talent but will take some time to acclimate to Bayern’s style. That’s fine!
- Raphaël Guerreiro subbed on at halftime before being replaced by Tom Bischof 17 minutes later. This is exactly how Joshua Kimmich and Konrad Laimer worked their way into the Bayern starting XI. Bischof’s individual defensive skills will be put to the test but it is certainly an interesting development while all three left-footed left-backs (Guerreiro, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Itō) are sidelined with injuries.
On Wednesday, Bayern will host Chelsea FC in the Champions League opener at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich returned to action in the Bundesliga by hosting Hamburger SV and just crushed the visitors.
The Bavarians took home a 5-0 victory in a game that was never close. Bayern Munich was dominant from the outset and wasted little time in giving Hamburg a not so friendly welcome back to Germany’s top flight.
Let get into how it all played out! This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:
- A look at the starting XI, which was exactly what most people expected.
- A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
- How a quick and relentless start just decimated Hamburger SV.
- Some final thoughts and takeaways on the match.

FT: Bayern wins!
90’+1: Yellow card. Aleksandar Pavlović is booked for a foul.
87’: Yellow card. Miro Muheim is booked for a foul.
76’: Substitutions. Sacha Boey replaces Luis Díaz. Fabio Baldé and Robert Glatzel replace Fábio Vieira and Ransford Yeboah Königsdörffer. Both teams are out of substitutions.
64’: Substitutions. Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof replace Harry Kane and Raphaël Guerreiro.
62’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 5-0. Harry Kane beats his defender in the box and finishes cleanly.
46’: Substitutions. Nicolas Jackson and Raphaël Guerreiro replace Serge Gnabry and Dayot Upamecano. Daniel Elfadli, Rayan Philippe and Jonas Meffert replace Aboubaka Soumahoro, Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit and Nicolás Capaldo.
- With a big match lurking on Wednesday, Vincent Kompany clearly instructed this team to put this match away in the first half. Two goals in the first 10 minutes, four total after 30 minutes. Consider the play executed. Bayern dominated this match from the opening whistle and refused to slow down.
- Serge Gnabry’s streak of blind confidence is a joy to watch. With the addition of Nicolas Jackson, Gnabry could have been looking over his shoulder. Instead, he is playing his best since the 2019/20 sextuple run.
- What can be criticized so far? Even against a second-tier opponent, Jonathan Tah and Josip Stanišić are shaky in closing down lengthy counterattacks down the right flank. There is not enough speed and aggressiveness from the pairing to stop higher quality attackers. Hopefully, Hiroki Itō and Alphonso Davies can take over these starting spots early into the Rückrunde.
- Please rotate at the break. Kompany should use four subs at halftime: Nicolas Jackson for Harry Kane, Kim Min-jae for Dayot Upamecano , Lennart Karl for Michael Olise, and Sacha Boey (the birthday boy!) for Konrad Laimer. Tom Bischof can replace Joshua Kimmich in the last 10-15 minutes.
29’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 4-0. Joshua Kimmich catches the defense napping on a quick restart, Luis Díaz’s shot is deflected for another goal.
27’: Yellow card. Dayot Upamecano is booked for a foul.
26’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 3-0. Serge Gnabry forces a handball, Harry Kane buries the penalty kick. The rout is on!
9’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 2-0. Quick passing ends up with Aleksandar Pavlović scoring from close range.
3’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 1-0. Serge Gnabry nutmegs a defender then rips a rocket of a goal from a tight angle.
1’: Yellow card. Aboubaka Soumahoro is booked for a foul.
1’: LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Through two matchdays, Vincent Kompany has led a hungry Bayern Munich team to the top of the Bundesliga table with wins over RB Leipzig and Augsburg. Following a busy international window for many of Bayern’s players, Bayern will need to quickly re-focus to defeat a struggling Hamburg squad. Bayern will also need to avoid looking ahead to a marquee midweek matchup with Chelsea to start the Champions League.
Back in the 1980s, Bayern and Hamburg ruled the Bundesliga. In the last 10 meetings, Bayern has won nine times by scoring 38 goals and only allowing three goals in return. Hamburg will have to look all the way back to 2009 to the last time they defeated the Rekordmeister. The last four meetings have been particularly embarrassing.
Hamburg has spent the last seven seasons barely missing out on promotion from the second division. Hamburg finished in the top four every season before finally finishing second in 2024/25.
Odds: Bayern (-1670), Draw (+1100), Hamburg (+2800)
Prediction: Bayern wins, 7-0. Michael Olise, Harry Kane, Luis Díaz will each score in the first half. Kane will make it a brace in the 55th minute before the bench is emptied. Lennart Karl will dribble past three defenders for his first career Bundesliga goal. Nicolas Jackson will add a quick brace and it will be all smiles in Munich.
It’s Bayern time.
