If you’re Arizona softball, you expect to have at least one player from the OC Batbusters Stith travel team in most recruiting classes. The Wildcats added their first on Tuesday morning with the commitment of four-star outfielder Mattea Stern.
Stern plays for highly competitive teams in both travel and prep softball. In addition to playing club ball for Batbusters, she plays high school softball for Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, Calif. The Mariners play in the CIF Southern Section DI, which is regularly one of the toughest prep divisions in the country.
The competitive nature of her high school league give more weight to Stern’s stats at Pacifica. She has a .400 batting average in 56 games, stretching over 160 total at-bats and 180 plate appearances. She has 64 hits with eight doubles and five triples over two years. She has drawn 14 walks and been hit by three pitches against 14 strikeouts.
While Stern hasn’t hit for a lot of power in high school, she makes things happen once she gets on base. She has 31 stolen bases at Pacifica with 20 of those coming her freshman year.
Softball America rates her as a four-star prospect. The outlet has her ranked as the No. 74 player nationally, the No. 11 outfielder, and the No. 20 player in the state of California.
Stern is the sixth commit for head coach Caitlin Lowe in the 2027 class. She joins four-star athletes Emma Anderson (C/OF), Taylor Sansaver (OF), Eloisa Maes (P), and Charlie Simi (CI), and three-star pitcher Arri Romero. The group currently sits at No. 7 in Softball America’s class rankings.
