Werder chief explains: Why we have no fixed target for the season

Announcing a fixed goal before the start of the season? Not for Werder Bremen. And even after the first two games in Frankfurt (4-1 defeat) and at home against Leverkusen (3-3), it’s still absolutely unclear which direction Bremen’s season will take this time.

Werder boss Peter Niemeyer is therefore holding back on making predictions, as he revealed in an interview with 'Bild': "Above all else – as with every season – is that we continue to play in the Bundesliga and want to reach 40 points as quickly as possible."

He is also working closely with new Werder coach Horst Steffen and values his perspective, Niemeyer continued: "For Horst, it’s crucial that we do everything to get better. What’s important to him is how we work together. That then results in an outcome. There is no seasonal goal in terms of a league position or a points tally, either internally or externally, this year."

The goal for the season is development, and that can’t always be measured by points alone, the Werder boss concludes.
