Sean Rueter has been thinking too much about pro wrestling since at least WrestleMania I, and blogging about it for SBNation & Cageside Seats since around WrestleMania 28.
We’ll see if he’s on the card, but as the (quite pricey) tickets for WrestleMania 42 went on sale this week, Mike “The Miz” Mizanin was a popular podcast guest. In one of those appearances — with Unlikely’s Adrian Hernandez — the reality show star-turned-future WWE Hall of Famer* spoke about his relationship with CM Punk.
When Hernandez asked who Miz is closest to in the business, he named Punk:
“A lot of people would look at it and probably be like, ‘Wait, what?‘”
We would be some of those people, Mike.
Punk famously had issues with a lot of things during his first WWE run in the aughts and 2010s, but despite their different backgrounds and career paths, Miz didn’t seem to be one of those things. But when the A-Lister seemed to take a shot at Punk during their time as rotating part-timers on FS1’s short-lived WWE Backstage studio show, Punk’s response was so nuclear he had to apologize to a whole country for it earlier this year.
Miz said at the time he didn’t understand the reaction as he thought he and Punk were friends. He explained more about their friendship on Unlikely:
“Punk, we have such history. We used to drive together. We’d always be in a van, there’d be five of us — and Swoggle — in a van driving town to town. And that was before iPhones, so all you would do is talk. So, we have such a rich history. And like memories of OVW, where we were all trying to become someone. And now here we are 20 years later — someone.“
Miz agreed when Hernandez asked if it “shocked” him that Punk apologized when he visited Raw prior to re-signing with the company in 2023:
“Yeah, I mean, I didn’t know what to expect.
”I remember coming down the stairs and seeing him, and just being like, ‘Hey.’ I didn’t know what to expect, right? And seeing him come back, it’s been interesting. Because I remember before. I remember driving with him, but I also remember when he was at the tail end. And it didn’t seem like he was a happy person.
“Now I see him backstage, and it’s a different person than I remember. He seems very happy.
”And I wouldn’t even say complacent, because he’s always competitive and always wants to be number one. But he’s also in a position where he’s teaching a lot, and there’s not many of us who have been here for 20 years and have been able to teach, learn, and adapt. So it’s cool to see the change, and the happiness, right? Cause you want happiness for everyone.“

* And a worthy one, by pretty much any criteria you can think of.
