Tigers' Gleyber Torres returns to Yankee Stadium for first time since departure

Detroit Tigers shortstop Gleyber Torres will return to Yankee Stadium on Tuesday for the first time since he signed with the Tigers this offseason.

Torres spent the first seven years of his career with the New York Yankees, and was a two-time All-Star.

This offseason, Torres signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Tigers, and will be a free agent once again at the end of this season.

Torres Makes First Return to New York

Torres will return to New York for the first time since he signed with the Tigers this offseason, after a very strong seven-year career with the Yankees.

The Yankees' infielder hit .265 with a .774 OPS across his seven years in New York, and accumulated 138 home runs and 441 RBI. However, Torres isn't a very emotional person and isn't sure how his return to New York will feel.

"To be honest, I don’t know," Torres said Sunday (h/t MLB.com). "Maybe. Who knows? For sure I’m going to see my teammates, it’s going to be fun to play against them. It’s going to be a really good competitive series.

"But just try to compete, be with the boys, try to win the series and we’ll see about the feelings when I get there."

Torres' feeling will also likely depend on the welcome he gets from Yankees' fans.

"No idea," Torres said (h/t MLB.com). "Hopefully good, but who knows? Let’s see how they react on the first day."

Although Torres decided elsewhere in free agency, the Yankees' infielder put up a strong postseason in New York before his departure. Torres hit .241 with a .744 OPS in the 2024 postseason, with two home runs and eight RBI.

The MLB veteran also drew 10 walks compared to just seven strikeouts, and one of his eight home runs came in a World Series Game 5 win, which was the Yankees' only win of the series.

Only time will tell if Torres get a warm welcome in his return to Yankee Stadium, but the Tigers' infielder certainly put together a nice seven-year career in New York.
