There is likely no FCS program in college athletics that is having as big an offseason as the Sacramento State Hornets.
On the gridiron, the Hornets recently hired offensive savant and up-and-coming coaching rockstar, Brennan Marion. In addition to being one of the best offensive minds in football, Marion is also an elite recruiter.
Sac State currently has one of the best 2026 recruiting classes in the sport, as it ranks No. 63 among all FBS and FCS programs in 247Sports' rankings.
On Monday, that class got a bit of a big-name boost, adding a commitment from three-star receiver and viral sensation Maxwell "Bunchie" Young.
Young was once viewed as a football prodigy who earned his first scholarship offer at the age of 11 from the Illinois Fighting Illini. His popularity was catapulted into mainstream media when he starred on Overtime's "Bunchie!"
However, his fame and notoriety in the football space only grew after he was featured in the NFL's “Next 100” campaign. The commercial saw him run from the park with his friends to midfield of Super Bowl LIV in 2020 while passing countless current and former NFL stars to deliver the game ball before the Kansas City Chiefs took down the San Francisco 49ers.

While Young was once viewed as the next great football star, he didn't quite end up being as elite of a recruit as many had initially expected.
According to 247Sports, the 5-foot-11 California product ranks as the No. 264 wide receiver while also ranking as the No. 222 player in the state. He also ended up receiving just three offers. In addition to Illinois and Sacramento State, he also received an offer from Arizona.
The Hornets as a program have made significant waves this offseason, bringing in a 37-man transfer portal class headlined by former four-star quarterback Jaden Rashada. In addition to the success in football, the basketball program also hired former NBA standout Mike Bibby as head coach, while bringing in NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal as general manager.
As the football program attempts to work its way into the FBS level, it is clear that there will be some big names strolling around California's capital.
