AEW’s All Out pay-per-view is coming up on Sept. 20 in Toronto, which happens to be the same date as WWE’s Wrestlepalooza PLE.
In order to make its launch on ESPN as big as possible, WWE is loading up the Wrestlepalooza card with the return matches of Brock Lesnar and AJ Lee. It was widely assumed that AEW would also stack the All Out lineup with as much star power as possible in order to keep its PPV buyrate from tanking that day. However, Tony Khan instead booked AEW World Champion Hangman Page against TNT Champion Kyle Fletcher, who is not yet a main event star in the promotion.
A new report from Fightful Select now gives us a better idea about why this happened. The original plan was apparently for Page to defend the world championship at All Out against Wardlow, who just returned last month at Forbidden Door to join the Don Callis Family. But Wardlow suffered a torn pec during his return angle, and he’s immediately back on the sidelines as a result. Tony Khan called an audible to instead book Page vs. Fletcher (another Callis family member) at All Out.
Hangman vs. Fletcher will certainly be a much better match in the ring than Page vs. Wardlow would have been. But is Wardlow a significantly bigger star than Fletcher when it comes to selling PPVs? I don’t think so, but I’ll let you debate that one in the comments below, Cagesiders.
