Orioles minor league recap 9/12: McDermott impresses in relief

Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 7, Durham Bulls (Rays) 4

Norfolk jumped out to an early lead with a four-run second. José Barrero got things started with an RBI single, and Reed Trimble plated Barrero with a double to left. A rehabbing Gary Sánchez followed with a two-run single that plated Trimble and Terrin Vavra. Sánchez finished 1-for-4 with a strikeout. Both Trimble and Vavra doubled in runs in the fifth.

The Tides used a patient approach to work seven walks. Jud Fabian received three free trips, and Ryan Noda walked twice. Enrique Bradfield Jr. finished 1-for-6 from the leadoff spot. The former first-round pick drove in the Tides’ final run with a single in the ninth.

Cameron Weston earned the win with five innings of one-run ball, but Weston walked five batters compared to only three strikeouts. Scott Blewett let the Bulls back in the game with three earned runs in one inning of work.

Chayce McDermott tossed two scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts. Will the Orioles give him a look out of the bullpen before the season ends?

Double-A: New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) 6, Chesapeake Baysox 4

The Baysox struck first with a two run first inning. Austin Overn launched a leadoff homer, and Max Wagner plated Tavian Josenberger with a single to left. Overn finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, and Josenberger went 2-for-4 with a walk.

Unfortunately, Chesapeake managed only five hits all game. Ethan Anderson provided Chesapeake a 3-1 lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Peter Van Loon coughed up four runs in the seventh inning.

Starter Luis De León struck out eight batters over five innings, and Daniel Lloyd struck out three while keeping the game close.

Norfolk: at Durham, 6:35 pm. Starter: Trey Gibson (1-3, 9.64 ERA)

Chesapeake: at New Hampshire, 6:35 pm. Starter: Juaron Watts-Brown (3-4, 3.80 ERA)
