Lando Norris led Oscar Piastri to a McLaren one-two in first practice at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The familiar look to the timesheets, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' George Russell third and fourth, belied an incident-packed hour.

A red flag because of a loose kerb interrupted proceedings for about 20 minutes, and limited the disadvantage that an engine problem could have inflicted on Piastri.

Lewis Hamilton clipped the wall in his Ferrari, damaging his front wing and giving himself a front-left puncture, on his way to 12th fastest time.

The delay was caused when a strip of rubber came loose underneath the kerb at Turn 16, the last corner on to the long pit straight.

The session was stopped while officials tried to resolve the problem, giving McLaren time to fix a power-unit issue that that had been discovered on Piastri's car on his first lap out of the pits.

The Australian, leading the championship from Norris by 31 points, managed 13 laps in the session compared with the 18 of the Briton.

Norris ended up 0.310 seconds quicker than Piastri, with Leclerc 0.552secs off the pace.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen looked on target to get into the mix at the front on a lap late in the session, only to lock a wheel in the tricky downhill braking zone into Turn 15 and spear into the escape road.

Verstappen ended the session seventh fastest, behind Williams' Alex Albon and the Dutchman's Red Bull team-mate Yuki Tsunoda.

Williams' Carlos Sainz, whose car dislodged the rubber under the Turn 16 kerb, was eighth fastest, ahead of the two Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar.

Hamilton's incident came at Turn Three, where he clipped the inside kerb after misjudging his turn-in. Until that point, he had been about 0.2secs off Leclerc, but he ended the session 0.831secs off his team-mate.
