NFL analyst floats Eagles-Browns trade that would give Philly much-needed cornerback help

The Philadelphia Eagles have a clear need at the cornerback position after what we saw in Week 1.

While Philly is in good shape with Quinyon Mitchell on the boundary and Cooper DeJean in the slot, the other side opposite Mitchell remains a huge concern.

We saw very clearly that Adoree' Jackson ain't it, and the jury is out on Jakorian Bennett after he played sparingly (seven snaps) in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.

If we know anything about Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, it's that he's not going to sit idly by without addressing a major concern, so look for Philly to explore the cornerback market.

In the eyes of Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox, Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome could be someone who is available for trade. As a result, he has floated this trade proposal for Philly and Cleveland:

  • Eagles receive: CB Greg Newsome
  • Browns receive: 2026 third-round pick

With low expectations this season, the Browns should sell off everything that isn't nailed down. Newsome in particular is a trade candidate because he's entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Newsome could provide an upgrade for Philly's secondary, as evidenced by his 59.8% completion rate allowed and 88.3 passer rating when targeted during his career.

The former first-round pick also offers versatility with his experience playing both in the slot and on the boundary.

The Eagles could choose to deploy Newsome on the outside to keep DeJean in the slot, or they could move the second-year cornerback outside and let Newsome play on the boundary. Either way, the Eagles would be better off than they are now.

The problem with Knox's proposal is that a third-round pick is probably too much for the veteran cornerback. We'd want to see the Eagles get a late-round pick back in such a deal. Trading a fourth-round pick would be much more palatable.

Either way, Newsome is someone the Eagles should have their eyes on moving forward if things don't improve at cornerback.
