Former Springbok fullback Bevin Fortuin has died, his Limpopo-based club Northam Rhinos confirmed on Thursday.

He was 46.

Fortuin was the head coach at the club, who were the 2025 Castle Lager SA Super League Champions.

“With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved head coach, Bevin Fortuin,” the statement read.

“The Northam Rhinos Rugby Club, along with our president Mr Gonsalves, CEO Mr Dunne, the executive team and the entire Zondereinde community, extend our deepest condolences to his wife, young son and family.

“Bevin’s immense contributions, both on and off the field, leave an immeasurable legacy. Our community feels his loss deeply, but heaven is richer for his presence. We salute you, Bevin Fortuin, Springbok no. 780, for the profound impact you made on the @Northam Rhinos and the Setaria and Zondereinde communities. Rest easy, Champ.”

Fortuin won two Springbok caps, playing against Ireland in the end-of-year tour in 2006 and against Australia in 2007.

He started his career in George, playing for the SWD Eagles from 2000, before moving to the Cheetahs in 2005 where he represented the union domestically, as well as in Super Rugby, before moving back to George to end his career with the Eagles.
