New Inter Milan head coach Cristian Chivu addressed the press ahead of tonight’s FIFA Club World Cup clash against CF Monterrey.
During the press conference via FCInterNews, Chivu talked about several things, including the famous ‘Thu-La’ partnership.
Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram were the cornerstones of Inter’s success under Simone Inzaghi.
Indeed, the formidable duo inspired the Nerazzurri to a landmark 20th Scudetto in 2023/24.
Furthermore, they helped the club reach the second Champions League final in three years.
Unfortunately, Paris Saint-Germain dismantled Inter in the Munich showpiece, condemning them to a trophyless season.
Inzaghi left the club shortly after the game, with the Serie A runners-up bringing Cristian Chivu to fill the void.
Despite his lack of experience in top-flight management, the 44-year-old arrives with great expectations.
His first test comes tonight as Inter take on Monterrey in their matchday-one fixture at the Club World Cup.
Inter Milan Boss Cristian Chivu Praises Thu-La Duo

“They’re both doing well,” Chivu said. “They had a ten-day stretch with their national teams, and we gave them a few days off afterward.
“As soon as Lautaro’s national team duties ended, he joined us here in America and started training right away.
“Marcus had a few extra days of rest since he played in his national team’s second match.
“You’ll see them too, they’ll be involved in this tournament.”
Meanwhile, newcomers Petar Sucic and Luis Henrique could make their Inter debuts tonight.
“The team has trained well,” Chivu added. “We’ve been almost fully reunited for the past two days.
“Of course, there are a few small issues, a few knocks, but overall nothing serious or concerning.
“The new signings have done a great job. Luis Henrique is slightly behind in terms of fitness because he had a few more weeks of vacation.
“Petar came straight here from the national team, so he’s had a few more sessions with us.
“You’ll definitely see them, whether from the start or during the match, we’ll have a chance to see them in action.”
Time to Move On

While the 2024/25 season left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth, Chivu doesn’t want to look back.
“We mustn’t dwell on the past, especially since we can’t change it,” he continued. “We have to remember this is the end of the 2024/2025 season and we must honor this competition – a club like Inter has to.
“Moreover, we have to show up and be the best version of this group and this team.
“No excuses – not about physical condition, not about mental condition.
“We’ve tried to work these past few days to build a team that’s mentally and physically serene, so we can perform well.”
Then, he discussed the possibility of changing Inter’s trademark 3-5-2 formation.
“In Italy, I think we’re too attached to systems and formations,” he added.
“What really matters are the principles of play, they’re more important than any system.
“Of course, in recent years Inter has used that system and way of occupying the pitch.
“However, what really mattered was having strong principles, and that’s what allowed the team to achieve important results.
“You must never lose those principles. Today’s football requires fluidity, mobility, and asymmetry.
“You must avoid giving reference points, always trying to create problems for the opponent’s defensive organization, whether they mark man-to-man or sit deep.
“This team has always had those principles. We’ll try to add a little something, though, of course, it’s not easy.
“Preparing for a match takes time, but you’ll probably already see a few things tomorrow.”
Quality Bursts at the Seams at CF Monterrey

In addition to Sergio Canales and Oliver Torres, Monterrey can call upon one of the world’s most decorated defenders of all time.
Indeed, ex-Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos will be the Mexcian side’s defensive mainstay in the United States.
Moreover, Pep Guardiola’s former assistant Domenec Torrent will be in charge of Rayados.
“I know their coach, Torrent,” Inzaghi stated. “Obviously, Sergio Ramos needs no introduction.
“In fact, I think we even played against each other once or twice. I know Canales and Ocampos as well – they’ve had solid careers in Europe.
“It’s a team with experience and identity, and it’s a great side. They’re here in this competition, and they certainly have their ambitions.”
Asked about the difference between European and America football, Inzaghi replied: “That’s a good question.
“European football is more organized, while here, you’re a bit more carefree and enjoy it a bit more.
“In my opinion, the perfect blend would be somewhere in between. But there isn’t a massive difference.
“Recently, South American and Mexican teams have been bringing in experienced players to create identity and take a step forward.
“The talent in South America is there. It’s always been there and always will be.”
Cristian Chivu Tells Inter Milan What They Must Do at Club World Cup

“You have to take it one game at a time,” Chivu continued. “It takes humility to understand that in this kind of competition, every match is important.
“You have to seize the moment, be ready to get through the group stage, and then face the knockout rounds.
“No one gives you anything in modern football – and so-called underdogs are often even more motivated when facing top clubs.
“But I don’t see it that way – every match starts 50-50, and to win, you have to do better than your opponent.”
Finally, Chivu addressed the constant media pressure he has been exposed to since taking over the reins.
“I’ve done more press conferences than any other coach – one every day… So if I say something today, maybe I won’t need to tomorrow, because they’ll already know, read, or hear it.
“The team must have the ambition and pride to go out and replicate what it has shown in recent years, both in Italy and in Europe.
“From that point of view, I don’t think motivation will be lacking because the Club World Cup is an important competition and we’re treating it as such.
“We’ll be ready to face it and do our best in every match.”
