The New York Mets are enduring a brutal stretch at the worst possible time. A team that once looked like it could challenge the Philadelphia Phillies is now simply trying to hold on to the final Wild Card spot. On Thursday night, the Mets didn’t just get swept by their division rivals — they also made the wrong kind of MLB history.
“The Mets are the only MLB team in the modern era to score 4+ runs in the first inning but have nobody reach base the rest of the game and end up losing,” Opta Stats posted.
If the Mets miss the postseason, the attention will quickly shift to the offseason — one that’s full of major questions. The biggest revolves around Pete Alonso.
Alonso continues to be asked about his future in New York, but he has yet to offer any real commitment.
“But again, we'll see what happens. I love it, it's great, but you can't really predict anything. And for me... I am focused on trying to put this thing across the finish line. “I haven't really thought about the free agent thing until we're talking about it right now,” Alonso said. “It would be great to stay. But, again, whatever happens, happens. I can't get a crystal ball. I wish I could, but we'll see.”
Alonso has been a massive figure for the Mets franchise. Just a month ago to the day, he set the club record for most career home runs. If that doesn’t speak to his legacy in Queens, it’s hard to imagine what does.

Still, his unwillingness to commit to the team’s future raises some red flags. Alonso remains one of the premier power hitters in the game, but his comments suggest that his bat might belong to another team next season.
