As per VI’s Geert-Jan Jakobs, John van den Brom (58) appears to be the main candidate to become manager of FC Twente.
His is the latest name doing the rounds after the club’s dismissal of Joseph Oosting subsequently saw Erik ten Hag, Mark van Bommel and René Hake all decline a possible position at Grolsch Veste.
Of those aforementioned three, Hake is the only one currently working elsewhere. He indicated that he doesn’t want to give up his job as assistant coach to Robin van Persie at Feyenoord. FC Groningen’s Dick Lukkien’s name was also mentioned at FC Twente, but no updates have been given. Talks with Van den Brom have reportedly already begun.
The technical director of the Enschede club maintains good contact with Van den Brom, with whom he shares a long history at Vitesse. The Amersfoort-based coach has been without a club since his departure from Vitesse.
The former player returned to Arnhem a year ago, although there were no real prospects for his career there. After a year filled with turmoil and penalty points, Van den Brom was unceremoniously thanked for his services by the then-policymakers at the club. Shortly after, he had another unpleasant experience with foreign owners when American major shareholders terminated his contract with ADO Den Haag.
Now, it appears Van den Brom will potentially be returning to coaching in a better light with Twente. He previously worked for AGOVV Apeldoorn, ADO, AZ, FC Utrecht, and Vitesse. In Belgium, he won a national title with Anderlecht (2013) and a national cup with KRC Genk (2021). Abroad, he also worked for Saudi Arabian club Al-Taawoun and Lech Poznan. With the Polish club, he reached the quarterfinals of the Conference League in 2023.
FC Twente are currently under the management of interim boss Ivar van Dinteren. The home game against NAC Breda awaits on Saturday evening.
