Knicks' Mike Brown Makes Decision on Jalen Brunson's Father on Staff

The New York Knicks are coming off one of their most successful seasons of the past 25 years. While they fell short of making the NBA Finals, they advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000. Unfortunately for them, waiting for them was the Indiana Pacers, a team that the Knicks have seen in the playoffs many times.

The Knicks met up with the Pacers in the playoffs the season prior, and saw their season come to an end, as the Pacers went on to play the Boston Celtics in the conference finals, where they were eventually swept.

However, their first trip to the conference in 25 years wasn't enough for head coach Tom Thibodeau to keep his job, as the Knicks fired him just days after being eliminated from the playoffs. Some were shocked by the move, while others, close to the situation, claimed that anything short of winning the NBA Finals would've yielded the same result.

After a lengthy search, the Knicks landed on former Sacramento Kings and Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Mike Brown. However, the move raises questions regarding the rest of the coaching staff.

New York Knicks star guard Jalen Brunson's father, Rick Brunson, served as an assistant under Thibodeau and will likely see a different role under Brown this season, according to New York Post reporter Stefan Bondy.

“Mike Brown is expected to hire a new associate head coach, The Post has learned, a move that will change the dynamics in the front of the Knicks bench by giving Rick Brunson a lesser role," wrote Bondy.

Brown is a two-time Coach of the Year award winner, and the Knicks hope he's what they need to get over the top. In 2023, he helped the Kings make the NBA Playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Now, the Knicks hope Brown can help them end a drought of their own and help bring home the team's first championship since 1973. If he falls short, Knicks fans will be quick to remind the team of this move down the road.
