The 49ers pulled out a win in Seattle, finishing it off with an unlikely hero. Tight end Jake Tonges was filling in for the injured George Kittle when he caught the game winner, 4-yards out from Brock Purdy with 1:43 left on the clock. His three receptions on the day were the only receptions so far in his career.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, their Week 1 game has sidelined two of their most important offensive player, Purdy and Kittle. Thankfully for the 49ers, they do get an easy matchup against the Saints in Week 2. That doesn’t mean they’ll win with Mac Jones behind center, but it sure gives them a better shot.

Below, we’ll go over Jake Tonges’ outlook in fantasy football for Week 2.

Fantasy Football analysis: 49ers, TE, Jake Tonges

Tonges was the pass catching tight end after Kittle went down, while Luke Ferrell was mostly a blocker. Tonges is an undrafted free agent who started with the Bears in 2022 and landed with the 49ers in 2023. He’s been on and off the practice squad in the meantime.

We know Tonges at least has touchdown upside, as seen in Week 1, but he is very much a touchdown dependent player in fantasy. He will split time with Ferrell and be needed to block as well. His upside is very low and his floor is zero.

Start or sit in Week 2 PPR leagues?

Sit. He’ll likely get the start for the injured Kittle and is in a good spot, but we just can’t trust him in fantasy with his likely low usage.

Start or sit in Week 2 standard leagues?

Sit. I would start Tonges in 2-TE standard leagues, as he has a real shot at another touchdown, just not a good enough one to risk it in single tight end leagues.
