Indiana men’s basketball: Darian DeVries discusses transfer portal strategy in Field of 68 interview

Indiana men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries sat down with Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68 for a wide-ranging interview covering a range of topics ahead of his first season with the program.

Among those topics was the Hoosiers’ approach to the transfer portal in assembling this season’s roster. No scholarship members of the 2024-25 team elected to remain in Bloomington for DeVries’ first year, with only then-incoming freshman Trent Sisley being locked into the 2025-26 roster after re-affirming his commitment upon DeVries’ hiring. As a result, the program had to turn to the transfer portal to build the entirety of its first roster.

DeVries said Indiana was very intentional in its approach, making sure to put together a team rather than just a collection of talent.

“We wanted to make sure that the guys complimented each, could play off of one another, and I’ve really been pleased with how it’s turned out to this point,” DeVries said.

Offensively, Indiana’s roster features plenty of players willing to make the extra pass and turn a good shot into a great shot. DeVries has emphasized an up-tempo style of play in his appearances as the program’s head coach, and the team’s foreign tour in Puerto Rico and practice reports have reflected this.

Additionally, DeVries mentioned a focus on being able to space the floor with 3-point shooting and how the program went after strong shooters in the transfer portal, landing his son Tucker DeVries and former Sam Houston State star Lamar Wilkerson.
