A much-anticipated clash of defending state champions takes place on Friday in one of the premier stadiums in North Texas.

Celina, the defending UIL 4A Division I state champ, takes on Gunter, which won the 3A DII title a year ago. The game will be held at Melissa’s Coach Kenny Deel Stadium, which was moved from Gunter in order to accommodate a larger crowd.

Both teams have picked right back up where they left off a season ago, as Celina and Gunter each bring 2-0 records into Friday’s showdown.

Celina brings an 18-game winning streak, and the Bobcats are coming off a 36-7 win against Waco La Vega, a game that was moved to Saturday due to inclement weather. Quarterback Bowe Bentley, an Oklahoma commit, was 13-of-17 passing for 149 yards and two total TDs, while running back Logan Gutierrez rushed for 166 yards and a TD.

Gunter has won 48 of its last 50 ballgames, a stretch that began in 2022. One of those two losses suffered by the Tigers came against Celina last season, when the Bobcats claimed a 38-7 win on their home turf.

The Tigers opened their new season with a 49-44 win against Houston Kinkaid before posting a 28-6 win against Prosper Richland last week. Both of those games were on the road.
