High school girls volleyball: Skyridge continues dominance with straight sets win over Corner Canyon

Skyridge continued to showcase its complete dominance, putting together another strong performance in defeating a stellar Corner Canyon team in straight sets Thursday, 25-22, 25-15, 25-22.

While Skyridge wound up getting the sweep, things didn’t start out great as the Falcons fell behind 8-4 in the opening set. As the game went on, however, Skyridge was able to make the necessary adjustments that were tailored more to its strengths.

“I think Corner Canyon came out really strong and I feel like we did a really good job of responding after falling behind early in the first set. Our girls came back and didn’t roll over and I just love how they came back,” said Skyridge head coach Siale Hifo.

“It was a little weirder start to the game than normal for us, but they did what they always do. We served good from the service line and that really helps our overall performance.”

Continuing about her team’s ability to dominate behind the service line, Hifo said, “Our service game is really one of our big strengths. We’ve been working a lot on it in practice, and I thought we did really well in the aspect of the game.

“We did a good job of playing our system and we have also been working on taking good and smart swings and I thought they did a good job of that tonight as well.”

Skyridge carried over the momentum from coming back to win the first set and never relented. With the score 3-3 in the second set, Skyridge broke things wide open by going on a 12-2 run.

Moving forward, Hifo would like to see a little more consistency from her team, regardless of who is on the other side of the net.

“Moving forward we want to make sure that we are continuing to play to our strengths every match and we’re playing our game, no matter who is on the other side,” she said. “I think if we do that it will help us out a lot tonight because I think that was where we were a little shaky tonight.”

Corner Canyon didn’t go down with a fight in the third set and went back and forth with the top team in the state before Lucy Meck sealed the win for Skyridge with a powerful kill into the open court.

Hifo is very aware of where her team is currently at and how dominant it has been. The hope is that the team can remain focused on each game as it comes and block out all of the extra buzz.

“After the game we talked about how we need to just ignore the noise right now because we are 15-0 and No. 1 right now. I just want them to kind of get that out of their heads,” Hifo said.

“When we focus on those two things I think it makes us worse. We need to make sure we’re not focused on that, and we’re only worried about the next game and getting better.”
