Glacier girls hand Sentinel 1st loss

Gracie Winkler got a hat track and assisted on another goal, and the Glacier Wolfpack knocked off Missoula Sentinel 5-1 in Western AA girls soccer Thursday at the Glacier fields.

It was the first loss of the season for Sentinel (7-1-2), which was outshot 28-15 by the hosts. The Spartans, who beat the Pack 3-2 to start the season, led 1-0 on a goal by Ayden Tucker. 

The rest of the match was all Wolfpack. 

Keeper Arien Todd turned away 12 shots and had a pair of assists, a rarity. Todd punted the ball ahead of the defense where twice, Winkler took the ball in for the goal, in the 15th and 19th minutes. 

Glacier coach Doug Mello added that Kylie Shine and Bailee Dahlman combined to set uip Winkler’s third goal in the 22nd minute; the Pack led 3-1 at intermission. Winkler now has 14 goals this season, to go with six assists. 

Neve Travis and Avi Schmautz found the net in the secon dhalf; for Schmautz it was her 13th goal. 

The Pack (6-3-2) is on a seven-game unbeaten streak, including a 2-0 win at Missoula Hellgate over the weekend. 

“We’re playing an aggresive style of defense and we’re also cranking out the shots,” Mello said. “We feel like we were really in our earlier games and were unhappy with the results. We thought we deserved better.  

“But we kept our nose to the grindstone, worked on getting better on defense and taking our shots. Now we’re firing on all cylinders at the right part of the season.” 

Mello also singled out Shine and senior Rachel Brannan for their defense; Brannan also sang the anthem before the game.

Brecken Evenson‘s second goal in the 77th minute gave Glacier the draw in this one. 

Sentinel led 2-0 before Isaac Weaks found the net for the Wolfpack in the 36th minute. 

Both Brecken and Sentinel’s Hayes Reimer scored in the 50th minute, leaving the Spartans up 3-2. 

Zander Schmautz had the helper on Evenson’s 12th goal of the season, that knotted it up.
