September 10: What you need to know for Wednesday

Todd Zola: There are four afternoon affairs, three of them on the West Coast. Action gets underway at 2:35 p.m. ET in Arlington with the Texas Rangers going for a three-game sweep over the Milwaukee Brewers.

  • Payton Tolle was originally scheduled to start today's game in Sacramento with the Boston Red Sox attempting to sweep the Athletics, but he'll now serve as a bulk reliever behind an opener. The rookie was impressive in his late August MLB debut, fanning eight while allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings. However, he struggled in his last effort, yielding five runs in only three frames.

  • The Red Sox will likely be without Romy Gonzalez for today's matinee after he left Tuesday night's contest with a sore knee. Gonzalez has been serving as the right-handed part of a first base platoon, so with the Athletics sending rookie right-hander Mason Barnett to the hill, Nathaniel Lowe will handle first base.

  • Staying with AL East pitching, Ryan Pepiot was slated to take the hill for the Tampa Bay Rays for a road date with the Chicago White Sox, but his turn will be skipped due to fatigue. Instead, Griffin Jax will serve as the opener, followed by a parade of relievers.

  • The Kansas City Royals will also rely on their bullpen for Wednesday evening's road date with the Cleveland Guardians. Michael Wacha was supposed to take the hill, but he was involved in an off-the-field incident and was sent back home and placed on the 7-day concussion list. Jonathan Bowlan is tabbed to open the contest.

  • The Royals enjoyed a boost last night with Bobby Witt Jr. returning from a three-game absence due to back spasms. He went 1-for-4 in a 2-0 loss to the Cleveland Guardians.

  • The Minnesota Twins also received an uplift with Byron Buxton coming back after missing only one game with a bruised knee. He was hit by a pitch on Sunday.

  • The Colorado Rockies will be without Warming Bernabel for at least the next week, as the rookie was placed in the 7-day concussion injured list. Bernabel was hurt attempting to make a diving catch in the first inning of Monday's game and was helped off the field. Michael Toglia was called up and played first base in Tuesday night's 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

  • Will Smith was back behind the plate for the Dodgers last night. He missed five games with a sore hand, incurred when he was hit by a pitch last Wednesday.

  • The Chicago Cubs finally placed Kyle Tucker on the IL after he missed five games with a left calf strain. They were able to backdate the move to September 6, though Tucker isn't likely to be ready when first eligible. Moises Ballesteros was called up to take the open roster spot. Willi Castro filled in at right field, though manager Craig Counsell could have Seiya Suzuki man the spot and use Ballesteros as the DH.

  • The Toronto Blue Jays will be without Bo Bichette in their quest for AL East supremacy. The veteran shortstop hurt his knee Saturday then missed Sunday's game. The club was off Monday, but Bichette still was unable to play Tuesday, prompting the move to the 10-day IL. Ernie Clement and Isiah Kiner-Falefa will handle shortstop in the interim.
