Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse has shared his thoughts on the club’s transfer business in the ongoing window.

The Tshwane giants have been uncharacteristically quite in the market, putting more emphasis on trimming the squad than bolstering.

While a host of players have departed the club as they were deemed surplus to requirements, Sundowns only brought in Fawaaz Basadien and Tsiki Ntsabeleng on loan from FC Dallas in the MLS.

Now, following what has been viewed as a slow start to the season, attributed to the FIFA Club World Cup fatigue, Carelse believes the lack of new signings also fueled supporters’ frustrations.

“They haven’t been really busy in the transfer market, which is a little bit unlike Sundowns and also, I think the squad is a little bit smaller. So, they probably have to get some more players in – I’m not too sure if they are going to,” he told Foot Africa.

“But I think obviously that’s also not entirely up to the coach. I think there are a lot of people or a recruitment team that decides what type of players need to come in. It has been quiet, and I think that’s also another frustration from the supporters’ side.

On the players that have left Masandawana, the ex-Downs midfield maestro believes with ample game time, they can be assets for Hugo Broos with major tournaments on the horizon.

“But the players that have left, I think it’s good for them, they want to be in teams where they can play regularly, so it’s good to let them go and let them add value to the national team. I think Sundowns will bring in replacements to try and get quality on quality,” Carelse added.
