Chargers star Khalil Mack lands on IR after brutal elbow injury in win over Raiders

The Los Angeles Chargers will be without Khalil Mack for the foreseeable future.

The Chargers sent Mack to injured reserve officially on Wednesday after he left Monday's win over the Las Vegas Raiders with a brutal elbow injury, head coach John Harbaugh announced. Mack will now miss at least four games.

Though the injury looked gruesome in the moment, the dislocated elbow is not expected to be season-ending, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Mack will now be eligible to return as soon as their matchup with the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 19.

Mack was diving to try and tackle Tre Tucker on the final play of the first quarter of Monday’s contest at Allegiant Stadium when his left arm was caught awkwardly between Tucker and a teammate. Mack’s left forearm bent back incredibly far before he hit the ground, which left him in very clear pain as he made his way off the field and to the sidelines.

Mack was seen doubling over in pain with the team’s training staff helping him on the sidelines before he hit the medical tent. He then left the field for the locker room, and was quickly ruled out by halftime. Mack returned to the field without his pads on and his arm in a medical sling to watch the rest of the contest.

Mack is in his fourth season with the Chargers after he signed a one-year, $18 million deal to return to the franchise this past offseason. The 34-year-old former Defensive Player of the Year award winner had 39 total tackles and six sacks last season.

Despite losing Mack, the Chargers had little issue picking up the 20-9 win over the Raiders on Monday night. That pushed them to 2-0 on the season after they beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil to kick off the year. They'll host the Denver Broncos next on Sunday, where a win would give the franchise its first 3-0 start since 2002.
