BYU wide receiver Jojo Phillips’ early-season breakout was halted after he suffered an upper body injury in Saturday’s 27-3 win over Stanford. He exited after making three catches for 30 yards.
On Monday, Phillips confirmed via a social media post he underwent surgery. “Out of surgery, everything went great," he wrote on X. "Thank you for all the love and support, Coug Nation. I’ll be back soon!!!”
The injury comes at a challenging time for the Cougars. Phillips’ absence leaves a void at receiver after BYU lost Keelan Marion to Miami in the transfer portal and Darius Lassiter to the NFL. Kalani Sitake and his staff put Phillips as a go-to option alongside Chase Roberts and Parker Kingston.
At 6-foot-5, Phillips’ size made him a difficult cover. He posted 211 receiving yards in 2024 and was vocal in fall camp about taking on a bigger role. There was no timeline set for Phillips' return to the field.
BYU (2-0) has an early bye week before moving on to a rare non-conference road game against East Carolina. The extra time will help Sitake prep his team with a young quarterback in Bear Bachmeier before opening the Big 12 slate against Colorado in Boulder.
