Arne Slot Praises Liverpool Mentality After Merseyside Derby Win

It’s five wins for five in the league. Arne Slot’s men continue to prove themselves capable of scoring more than their opponents, even if they haven’t quite mastered how to stop the other team from scoring in the first place. But a win is a win, at the end of the day, and the Reds have certainly started racking them up.

Their latest was a 2-1 win in the Merseyside Derby when Everton traveled down the road for David Moyes’ annual loss at Anfield.

After the match, Arne Slot highlighted the difficulty in playing three games in a week — after an international break, no less — and the kind of mentality it takes for the players to keep winning.

“We needed mentality today in a different fashion maybe than the few times before,” he said. “But we always knew how difficult a game this would be, let alone if you have proper preparation time. But if you played your third game in less than seven days, against your rivals, then you know that the second half could be very tough.”

And it was — tough, that is. Tough to watch Liverpool dominate the first half and survive the second. But in the end they did as much as they had to do to earn all three points.

When asked about how he felt his team managed the game, Slot said, “I think we managed the game really well, but we didn’t manage some moments really well. This was also the thing I said before the game. There is a lot to like, but we have to understand a moment can change momentum.”

The men responsible for getting Liverpool across the line were Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike, who is on fire.

About the goals and those two players, Slot said, “I think it’s for every player the same, you need a team around you to show how good you are. I know we have a lot of good players, like I just mentioned. Both goals were similar, [in a] similar area that we attacked – first with Ryan, second time with Hugo with the pace these two have.”

The Carabao Cup kicks off the Reds on Tuesday when they take on Southampton. Unsurprisingly, Slot freely admits that none of Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, or Ryan Gravenberch will be appearing.

“If that’s any help for Southampton then they will know,” he added.
