It's never ideal to cut a third-round pick just a game into his third season.
That's especially true when the third-round pick was a kicker.
But on Tuesday, that's the decision that the San Francisco 49ers made.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the 'Niners are waiving Jake Moody.
"Since Week 10 of last season, kicker Jake Moody has made 12 of 23 field goal tries, a 52% rate that is more than 11% lower than all other kickers who have attempted at least 10 field goals across that span," ESPN's Nick Wagoner wrote on Monday. "On Sunday, he missed from 27 yards in the first half then had a 36-yarder blocked in the second half, making him the first San Francisco kicker to have two misses inside 40 yards in a game since 2006."

As a rookie in 2023, Moody had made 84% of his field goals.
That was down to 70% in 2024, already too low a number.
And his Week 1 struggles were the final blow in getting Moody off the team.

There's always a need for kickers, and Moody has a great pedigree, but he probably won't be claimed off waivers.
His name will likely resurface down the road as a replacement for another team.
San Francisco has been most linked to Greg Joseph, who spent time this summer with the 49ers, although no report has come out yet about who the 'Niners plan to sign. All that's known now is that Moody is gone.
