Will A.J. Brown play Week 2? Eagles reveal plans for star WR's usage after clunker

A.J. Brown had one of the most inexplicably disappointing Week 1s for a star player in recent memory.

The Philadelphia Eagles' wide receiver might as well have not been out there for 58 minutes of the game. Only in the closing stages did Jalen Hurts find Brown for a meager eight-yard catch.

He hadn't even been targeted up to that point, and it would've been the first game in his NFL career without a single target if not for that last-gasp connection.

It makes it very hard to know what to expect from Brown going forward. Even dating back to the end of last season, he had a big NFC Championship game but not much else in the games around it.

The Eagles did share thoughts on Brown's usage ahead of a Week 2 clash with the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch.

Will A.J. Brown play Week 2?

A.J. Brown will suit up again for the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs late Sunday afternoon.

And the Eagles plan to get him more involved than he was against the Cowboys.

Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo gave a long answer Tuesday to explain what happened:

“When you game plan, obviously the number one guy is going to be A.J., [receiver] DeVonta [Smith], [tight end] Dallas [Goedert]. In the pass game, they’re going to get the targets. Going in, we had a fair share of things that were going to go to him as the primary, and sometimes games play out like that and that’s kind of how it was.

"[W]e don’t ever want to force it. If it’s one of those games where you’re trying not to force it and you’re being productive and you’re staying on track, the guys understand. He played his butt off, too. He knew what was going on and just the way it was, and then we were moving the ball and being efficient.

“I think when you look at it, you always put that in mind when you start the game plan. Like this week, ‘Hey, he’s the guy, this is where we want to go with it.’ Once the game starts to unfold, you just kind of play it accordingly.”

Earlier this week, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni praised Brown because he stayed ready and made a key catch late in the game to set up a first down on the following play.

That doesn't help fantasy owners who want to know what to do with Brown this week, though.

Encouraging for Brown is that the Chiefs gave up strong performances to all three of the Chargers' WRs: Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Keenan Allen.

Brown is a supersized version of Johnston, who caught two touchdowns. So there could be much better days ahead soon.
