The Whitefish girls weren’t far out of the lead after the first day of the Kalispell Invitational.
On the second day the Bulldogs turned it into a runaway.
With three golfers in the top 12, Whitefish turned a 3-stroke deficit into a 24-stroke victory Thursday, when the tournament finished at Buffalo Hill Golf Club.
Missoula Sentinel held on to the boys title while Polson’s Max Milton was boys medalist once again, surging to a one-stroke win.
Whitefish’s Karlee Brown shot the day’s best round for the girls, 81, and her two-day total of 168 was five strokes behind medalist Carmeron Burnett of Hamilton. Right behind Brown was her teammate Ryhlee Scott, who had a 170 total.
Caroline Owens came in at 188 and Whitefish ended with 727 strokes. Hamilton was second at 751; First-day leader Glacier was third at 155.
Maggie Mitton and Kendall Tkachyk finished in the top nine for the Wolfpack.
Flathead, seventh among the 10 full girls teams, was led by Hayden Ward. Ward shot a 96 Thursday to finish 18th with a total of 199.
There were more fireworks on the boys’ side. Milton birdied No. 14 and then No. 17 coming in to shoot a 71. Glacier’s Luke Nelson chipped in for birdie on 17 to stay within one stroke, and both players made par on 18.
Meanwhile Nelson’s Wolfpack teammate Torren Murray drove the 18th green and ran in a 40-foot putt for eagle.
Milton was 5-under 137 for the 36-hole event. Murray and Nelson tied for second at 138 along with Helena Capital’s John Gilbert, who followed his first-day 63 with a 75.
Sentinel’s Jack Schaefer, Joseph Meusey and Hudson Goroski were steady at Buffalo Hill and the Spartans won the team title by two strokes over Glacier, 580-582. Capital was two back of Glacier in third.
Flathead’s boys were ninth. The Braves’ top finish was Conner Gall, who fired an 83 for a two-day total of 171. That tied him for 42nd.
