West Virginia Mountaineers: Transfer 101: Ty Crutcher

The commitment run continued for the West Virginia Mountaineers football program with a pledge from versatile West Florida transfer cornerback Ty Crutcher.

Crutcher, 5-foot-10, 175-pounds, committed to the Mountaineers following an official visit to campus giving the program another defensive back into the fold.

The Alabama native spent one season at West Florida where he appeared in 10 games and recorded 13 tackles, 4 pass breakups and an interception. Prior to that Crutcher spent time at Dodge City C.C. where he recorded 19 tackles and a pair of interceptions during the 2023 season.

Crutcher played wide receiver in 2022 and caught seven passes for 98 yards across three games.

Crutcher is the fourth defensive back to commit to West Virginia since the start of the spring transfer portal period joining Akron defensive back Darrian Lewis, Appalachian State cornerback Nick Taylor and Dodge City C.C. (Kan.) 2025 safety Kaleb Gray.

Crutcher has at least one year of eligibility remaining but that could be more depending on what unfolds with the junior college ruling.

WVSports.com breaks down the transfer commitment of Crutcher and what it means to the West Virginia Mountaineers football program both now and in the future.

The data:

A former wide receiver, Crutcher has made the move to defensive back and has been productive as a coverage option both at the junior college and division II levels. While advanced statistics for West Florida are not available, Crutcher has been active both getting his hands on passes and with interceptions across his two seasons at the position.

Fitting the program:

Crutcher is slated to play the traditional cornerback or even inside cornerback role for the Mountaineers and joins a room that has 10 other players although a pair of those are true freshmen. The Mountaineers recruited Crutcher to step in and contribute and his versatility is something that should aid him when it comes to potentially carving out a role this coming season.

Crutcher has at least one season remaining and while that could increase it means that he was brought in to try and compete for time from the jump. That’s where his ability to move around should help him with his pathway to seeing the field this fall.

Recruiting the position:

West Virginia has continued to add transfers and roster pieces at almost every spot on the roster much like head coach Rich Rodriguez alluded to during the latter portions of the spring. The Mountaineers now have two true cornerback additions although several could slot into those roles.

It would be naive to suggest that West Virginia is done with adding players at any position given what’s unfolded over the past few weeks but cornerback is a spot that has started to fill out given what was on the roster this past spring and what has been added.
