Virginia Tech fires head coach Brent Pry after 0-3 start

Virginia Tech’s massively disappointing start to the 2025 season has led to one of the first coaching changes of the season.

According to multiple reports, the Hokies have fired Brent Pry on Sunday after a 45-26 loss to Old Dominion dropped Virginia Tech to 0-3. The Hokies trailed 28-0 at halftime of the loss thanks to three first-half turnovers and scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to save themselves from further embarrassment.

The loss to ODU came a week after Virginia Tech blew a 20-10 halftime lead in a 44-20 home loss to Vanderbilt. None of the Hokies’ five second-half drives made it 20 yards as the Commodores scored 34 unanswered points. In Week 1, Virginia Tech lost 24-11 to No. 11 South Carolina in Atlanta.

A former defensive coordinator at Penn State, Pry was hired at Virginia Tech after the Hokies parted ways with Justin Fuente after the 2021 season. Virginia Tech was 3-8 in Pry’s first season, but made it to bowl games in each of the past two years. However, the Hokies haven’t won more than seven games in a season and are 16-24 overall under Pry.

Virginia Tech has been searching for sustained excellence ever since Frank Beamer retired after the 2015 season. The Hokies won at least 10 games every season from 2004 through 2011 and have hit 10 wins just once since then.

That came in Fuente’s first season in 2016 when Virginia Tech was 10-4 and won the Belk Bowl. It ended up being the high point of Fuente’s tenure, as Tech went 9-4 in 2017 and was 5-5 before Fuente was fired with two games to go in the 2021 season.

The move to part ways with Pry comes ahead of what could be a very active coaching carousel following the 2025 season. The 2024 offseason was relatively quiet with no movement in the SEC and just one Big Ten team making a coaching change.
