Virginia Tech embarrassed 45-26 by ODU in Blacksburg

It didn’t take long to know that Saturday night would be another long night for the Virginia Tech Hokies. But when the Hokies went down 21-0 to ODU, inside of Lane Stadium, everyone knew it was over. It was, as the Old Dominion Monarchs picked up their third win over Virginia Tech in nine seasons, demolishing the Hokies 45-26.

Tech’s defense forced a three-and-out on the first drive. How did Tech respond? With two Kyron Drones’ incompletions, a four-yard completion, a penalty, and a punt.

Then, VT’s defense forced a turnover around midfield. How did the Hokies respond? An incomplete pass, a zero-yard run, and a sack. Then, Tech punter Nick Veltsistas hits a punt inside ODU’s 15-yard line. Something good is eventually going to happen. Right?

Yes, for ODU. Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph led an eight-play, 93-yard drive that ended when he scored on a six-yard touchdown.

The wheels are off.

The Hokies took over on the next drive and had something going, by sticking with the run game. It was a nine-play, 89-yard drive that ended when Drones fumbled inside the five-yard line. The Monarchs took over and went seven plays and 93 yards to take a 14-0 lead. The jam-packed crowd at Lane Stadium was already heading for the exits — early in the second quarter.

On the next drive, Drones was intercepted, which led to another long ODU drive that ended with a touchdown and a 21-0 lead. Then there was another touchdown, and a field goal and it was 31-0.

I feel like I am missing something here. Oh yeah, the penalties. There were multiple VT penalties, the bad ones, too.

OK, enough about that. Head coach Brent Pry kept Drones in the game. In the end, Drones posted respectable numbers, completing 26 of 39 passes for 266 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown. But there’s a reason why you watch the games and not the box scores. Drones was terrible. In addition to the interception, he had two lost fumbles. All led to disastrous results, stopping Virginia Tech drives and leading to ODU touchdowns.

The Hokies are now 0-3, and Wofford comes to town next week. If Virginia Tech fans really want to make a statement, they won’t use their tickets next week. Despite last week’s effort in the loss to Vanderbilt, Hokie Nation still packed Lane Stadium on Saturday—an A+ fan base, with an F- team and coaching staff.

Right now, this looks like a 1-11 team. Heck, at this point, that win might not be against Wofford. If Virginia can’t beat Virginia Tech in 2025, well, let’s wait on that one.

Will there be changes come Monday morning? There needs to be — and they need to be sweeping changes. This season is long over. Do something Virginia Tech never does: get a head start on a new regime.
