The Phoenix Suns started their offseason off with a massive move as they traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets on Sunday.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Suns sent Durant to the Rockets for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 draft and five second-round picks.
This was a massive move for both sides as the Rockets added future Hall of Famer to their young core that is fresh off finishing second in the Western Conference last season.
For the Suns, they acquired a young star in Green, a great defender and leader in Brooks along with much-needed draft capital as they begin their rebuild around Devin Booker.

While the Suns ultimately elected to send Durant to the Rockets, there have been multiple reports that have come out since the trade centering around other trade offers they received from multiple other teams.
Among those was the one from the Minnesota Timberwolves, who were reported to be one of Durant’s least favored landing spots.
According to Suns insider John Gambadoro, the Timberwolves’ offer for Durant consisted of Rudy Gobert, Donte DiVincenzo, Rob Dillingham or Terrance Shannon Jr. and the No. 17 pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft.
This is a massive report by Gambadoro and it is clear that the Timberwolves were desperately trying to pair Durant alongside Anthony Edwards with this trade package.
If the Suns would have elected to accept Minnesota’s deal, they would have added a much-needed starting center in Gobert, a great player off the bench in DiVincenzo and a solid young guard in either Dillingham or Shannon Jr. to go along with the 17th pick in the 2025 draft.

This trade package appears to be much better than the one they received from the Rockets but with Durant’s unwillingness to be traded to Minnesota, it is clear that his decision cost the Suns a chance to compete in the West next season.
Despite this, Phoenix ultimately made their decision based off Durant’s preferred destinations but by doing so, they may have cost themselves a larger return for their future Hall of Fame forward.
