This ‘magic’ jewelry cleaning pen made my 115-year-old ring sparkle like new — and it’s just $9

When my fiancé proposed in April with a ring that's been around since Taft was president, I realized I’d committed to two things: spending a lifetime with my soon-to-be husband, and inadvertently keeping this ring sparkly and clean so it survives at least another 100 years. Frustratingly enough, it's the latter that's proven more problematic. The ring has tiny diamonds sprinkled throughout, plus geometric detailing that, while pretty, is difficult to clean around. After disappointing results from a number of other jewelry cleaners, I stumbled upon a small-but-mighty pen that promised to do the work, minus the mess — and to my shock, it worked.

VERDICT: This pen is a whiz at sloughing off dust, dirt and whatever other nasties linger in the grooves of your sparkler.

Pros

  • Quickly cleans grime off most jewelry
  • Mess-free
  • Built-in brush
  • No smell

Cons

  • Has to be rinsed off with water
  • Doesn't hold a lot of product
  • Hard to control how much product dispenses
  • Doesn't come with a cloth for drying

Even though I only had my ring for a few months, all my hand-washing and obsessive lotion-applying has done a number on just how blingy my new bling looked; so much so that a friend pointed out that it was starting to look a little dull. The Diamond Dazzle Stik reduces the amount of oils, dirt and other nasties that linger between the grooves of your prized sparkly possessions, so they're left looking like the first day you wore them. Call it a magic wand, if you will.

I admit I was skeptical: I had other cleaners from Connoisseurs, and while they helped bring back some sparkle, they were messy and about as travel-friendly as toting a rhinoceros in my pocketbook. The Dazzle Stik is compact and roughly the same size as a pen, so it can easily fit in my purse or even a makeup bag. It doesn't drip or leak, and it's a lot easier than dipping my ring in a chemical-smelling bath and sloughing off any excess with the world's tiniest, most useless brush.

The Connoisseurs Diamond Dazzle Stik is super easy to use too. Just twist open the cap and gently brush your jewelry with the applicator. Rinse the residue off with water and before you know it, your sparkler will make good on its promise to, well, sparkle. Word to the wise: The brand recommends that the pen only be used on diamonds (mined or lab grown), precious stones, moissanite and gold and platinum jewelry.

I'll be frank: The pen doesn't replace a professional clean by a jeweler, especially if your ring is more delicate or extra-grimy. Still, the pen is great in a pinch or if you need to clean on-the-go.

I'm not the only one dazzled by how well it eradicates dust and dirt, though: The pen has been purchased over 30,000 times in the past month and amassed nearly 45,000 five-star ratings.

"It literally looks like my jewelry has been cleaned by a jeweler!" shared one repeat shopper. "It cleans under my stones setting, removing all tarnish of the white gold, without damaging my vintage alexandrite. It even makes the tiniest of diamonds and gems come back into brilliance. ...This is so easy and quick to use. I'll never go without it."

"I don’t know what kind of magic is in this little pen, but it works," raved another thrilled reviewer. "My rings look professionally cleaned in like 30 seconds. It’s super easy to use. All you have to do is twist, brush, rinse and you are done. I keep it in my kitchen under the sink, that way it’s handy when I get it messy after cooking dinner."

Don't get too sparkle-obsessed, though: Some reviewers note that the pen only lasts a handful of uses before you need to repurchase.

Shared one: "This jewelry cleaning stick actually does a good job cleaning. The detergent cleans thoroughly and the brush gets into intricate parts of rings and other small jewelry without causing scratches or damages. Only four stars as each stick only lasts for four or five cleanings and runs out."

A perfectly sparkly ring (or necklace, or bracelet) is just a few swipes away.
