The Phillies' $8.5 million gamble on Jordan Romano was a failure

Back in December, the Philadelphia Phillies signed Jordan Romano to a one-year, $8.5 million deal. They were excited to add a two-time all-Star who had a ton of success with the Toronto Blue Jays, but was coming off a shaky season..

He struggled during his time in Philadelphia. He has pitched in 49 games, holding a career-high 8.23 ERA across 42.2 innings of work. Romano was removed from the closer role and most recently landed on the 15-day IL back on August 26.

Romano's injury is right middle finger inflammation, and while trying to return, he experienced a setback. He has yet to return, and with the postseason right around the corner, there are concerns that he will not play again this season.

Jordan Romano will become a free agent once again when this season comes to a close. Given his production this year, Edward Eng of That Ball's Outta Here argues that the Phillies will not be chasing the two-time All-Star in free agency.

"With key trade deadline acquisition Jhoan Duran firmly entrenched as the closer for the foreseeable future, Romano will be forced to look for a new home in 2026, with a team that still believes he has anything left."

Jhoan Duran has stepped into the team's closing role after Romano's failures. He is expected to remain in that position throughout the 2027 season, unless something unexpected arises. Romano will have to bank on another club giving him a chance and hopefully rebounding next season.
