Awoniyi hospitalised after horror injury against Leicester
Nottingham Forest and Nigerian international forward Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma after undergoing the first stage of surgery to treat a severe abdominal injury sustained in Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Leicester City.
The 27-year-old was hurt late in the game at the City Ground, colliding with the post in the 88th minute while attempting to convert a low cross from Anthony Elanga. Awoniyi, who had come on as a substitute for Ibrahim Sangaré, was left requiring prolonged treatment on the pitch.
Forest confirmed on Tuesday that the striker underwent successful surgery on Monday night and is currently recovering in hospital. A second phase of the procedure is scheduled for Wednesday. In a statement, the club said Awoniyi is “recovering well” – a reassuring development given the severity of the incident.
Assistant referee delay sparks safety debate
Controversy surrounded the incident due to the officiating protocols that were in place at the time. Elanga had been in an offside position when he received the ball, yet the assistant referee kept the flag down – in line with guidance to allow play to continue if an immediate goalscoring chance is imminent. The flag only went up after the collision had occurred.
This interpretation of the rules, though intended to support fair review by VAR, has once again prompted criticism for potentially increasing risk to players. The debate has intensified in the wake of Awoniyi’s injury, raising questions about whether officiating procedures adequately prioritise player welfare.

Forest hierarchy express concern over incident
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis made his way onto the pitch post-match, visibly shaken, to speak with manager Nuno Espírito Santo. The Greek businessman has since been kept regularly informed about Awoniyi’s condition and is said to be “deeply concerned” about the way the injury was handled on the field.
Forest’s official club communication underscored the gravity of the situation, stating: “This is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game and why a player’s health and wellbeing must always come first.”
Next steps in Awoniyi’s recovery
With the second part of surgery imminent, all thoughts at Forest remain firmly with their No.9. While the timeline for Awoniyi’s full recovery remains uncertain, early signs following the first procedure are reportedly positive.
His absence will undoubtedly be felt on the pitch, but the priority now is ensuring the striker receives the best possible care as he navigates the recovery process. The club, teammates, and fans will be hoping for continued encouraging updates in the days ahead.
