Settler violence against soldiers prompts emergency security meeting

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has called an emergency meeting for Monday due to violence by radical settlers in the West Bank against their own security forces.

According to Katz's office, representatives of all security organizations were to take part.

During the night, dozens of Jewish extremists attacked and set fire to an Israeli military facility in the occupied West Bank.

According to media reports, the attackers wanted to protest against the use of warning shots by soldiers during a confrontation with settlers at the weekend.

A teenager was injured in the attack.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023, there has also been an increase in violence by radical settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The army is repeatedly accused of not taking decisive enough action against the settlers.

Right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has overseen a significant expansion of settlements during his time in power.

Commenting on the attack by settlers on Israeli security forces, Katz said: "This phenomenon must be stopped immediately. We will use all necessary means to eradicate this violence at its roots - no one will dare lay a hand on Israeli army soldiers or security forces."
