Roman Anthony Likely Not Playing First Base for Boston

The Boston Red Sox's future is in good hands, with young players currently on the Major League and Triple-A rosters.

Second baseman Kristian Campbell was the first young prospect this season to not only join an MLB roster but also be a key contributor for the Red Sox. Several prospects have the ability to contribute to the team immediately.

Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony gets ready for an at-bat during a WooSox game on April 13, 2025 at Polar Park.

Outfielder/infielder Roman Anthony and outfielder Nate Eaton are two prospects who could be called up to the Major Leagues based on injuries to the starters. At 21, there is plenty of time for the Red Sox to continue developing Anthony, but the team is confident he could play soon.

The only question surrounding Anthony is the position he would play, both short-term and long-term. Former Red Sox pitcher and current team president Craig Breslow talked about what position he would play to Alex Speier.

“I think just given (Anthony’s) age, there’s still an opportunity for him to develop in the outfield. Until you feel like that’s a place where there isn’t just a massive opportunity cost to taking away reps, that’s where he should be focused. And I also I think obviously, at some point he’s going to be impacting our major league team, and to throw another variable into the mix doesn’t make a ton of sense when that transition in and of itself can be difficult at time.”

This comes after concerns about first baseman Triston Casas’ future with the team, especially since he is on a one-year contract. There are rumors of Casas potentially being on the trade block or being demoted. Either way, it sounds like the organization doesn’t feel comfortable moving Anthony away from the outfield to play first base.
