Range Riders' pitching shuts down Mustangs

BILLINGS — Jared Engman threw six strong innings and the bullpen added three scoreless frames as the Glacier Range Riders defeated the Billings Mustangs 3-2 Wednesday at Dehler Park. 

Logan Beard scored the winning run in the eighth for the Range Riders. He tripled to lead off inning and came in on Xavier Casserilla’s grounder to first — the throw home was errant, but Casserilla got his second RBI. 

Engman allowed two runs in the bottom of the second, but the Range Riders held Billings scoreless from that point on.  

Both teams are now 16-28 and tied for ninth in the standings with three games left in the first half of the season. 

Davis Pratt earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out two in one inning of work. Luke Cooper and Rayne Supple also threw one-hit innings. Supple picked up his second save of the season. 

Casserilla put Glacier on the board first with a single to left that scored Beard, who went 3-for-4 and scored twice. 

The Mustangs responded in the second as Tyler Shelnut hit a sacrifice fly and AJ Shaver brought in a run on a groundout. 

After four scoreless innings, Glacier tied the game in the seventh as Kyle Ashworth scored Joshua Rego with a sacrifice fly. 

Next inning, Beard took advantage of a throwing error to put the Range Riders ahead 3-2. 

Arturo Alvarez started for the Mustangs, allowing eight hits and two runs in 6 1-3 innings. Ryan Sleeper allowed one run in 2 2-3 innings; both pitchers fanned three batters.  

The teams continued their six-game series Thursday; that game was not finished at press time.
