Rafael Devers First Comments After Red Sox Trade Will Have Boston Fans Sick

Two days ago the Boston Red Sox sent superstar hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a trade that rocked the baseball world. Now, Devers was quoted for saying something that will drive Red Sox fans crazy in some of his first comments after the trade.

According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, Devers said "I'm here to play wherever they (the Giants) want me to play."

These words come after Devers had previously refused to play first base for the Red Sox, becoming upset at the team for even asking. Clearly Devers and the organization were both rubbed the wrong way.

Boston Red Sox third base Rafael Devers (11) sits in dugout sixth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

According to MLB.com, the reason that Devers was previously upset at Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was because the team changed their mind after previously asking him to be a designated hitter.

"Yeah. I don't feel that they were true to their word," he said. "They told me that I was going to play this position – DH -- and now they're going back on that. I just don't think they [are] staying true with their word," Devers said.

Boston fans have to be frustrated to see a homegrown superstar talent head out the door, especially in such a messy divorce, but getting out from under a 10-year deal worth $313.5 million could end up working out for both sides going forward.

At the top of his game Devers is still one of the best hitters in the MLB, but his unwillingness to do what was best for the team rubbed a lot of fans the wrong way. Taking a different approach in San Francisco is a big step in making a positive first impression at his new home.
