Premier League Awards: Zubimendi zinger, Liverpool late show

Our Premier League Weekly Awards honour the best – and worst – of the weekend action, featuring Liverpool’s late shows, Martin Zubimendi, Ruben Amorim and Erling Haaland.

Moment of the Week

Liverpool just keep finding a way. The champions have been fairly unconvincing in the season’s opening weeks, as Arne Slot looks to integrate his expensively assembled side together. The Reds have not looked the force of last season, but remain top of the table and with maximum points.

After three consecutive late winners this season already, Liverpool added a fourth as a 95th-minute Mohamed Salah penalty snatched three points at stubborn Burnley. It’s the first time that a side has won four straight Premier League games with a winner scored in the final 10 minutes or later.

Hannibal Mejbri’s handball cost the Clarets dearly, while Liverpool’s title rivals no doubt groaned in frustration as the champions bailed themselves out again.

Player of the Week

Pep Guardiola has said he believes that Erling Haaland is ‘better than ever’, a statement that is sure to strike fear into opposition defenders. Haaland was at his clinical best as Manchester City eased to a 3-0 derby win this weekend, scoring twice with two trademark finishes to take the game away from Manchester United.

In between he was a crucial presence defending set-pieces inside his own area, while his sheer pace tormented a Manchester United backline that was all at sea.

Haaland has now scored seven goals in two games this week, after netting five for Norway against Moldova during the break. Guardiola said earlier this week that he wouldn’t swap the 25-year-old for anyone. We don’t blame him.

Goal of the Week

Martin Zubimendi opened his Arsenal account this weekend and did so in style. The Spaniard is not a regular goalscorer, having netted just nine league goals in his senior career before this weekend, but a brace against Nottingham Forest announced his arrival in North London.

The first was a special strike, struck sweetly on the volley to flash past Matz Sels.

Save of the Week

David Raya has quite the collection of stunning saves in an Arsenal shirt and added another this weekend.

The Spaniard got the faintest of touches on Chris Wood’s improvised effort, stretching his fingertips to push the looping effort onto the crossbar.

Stat of the Week

Brentford continue to be the masters of the set piece. The appointment of former set-piece coach Keith Andrews as their new manager has ensured continuity in West London.

A week to forget for…

Ruben Amorim. The Manchester United manager continues to cut an exasperated figure and a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Manchester City has only increased the pressure on his shoulders. United have taken just four points from their opening four games, the club’s worst start to a Premier League season since 1992/93.

Amorim has now won just 36.17% of his games in charge of the Red Devils, the worst win percentage of any Manchester United manager since the Second World War. Managers need time, but how long will the board remain patient without clear signs of improvement?
