Post 14 Eagles finish in fourth with 8-5 loss to Bonivital

JAMESTOWN — The Jamestown Post 14 Eagles could not overcome a poor fifth and sixth innings and it cost them in an 8-5 loss to the Bonivital Black Sox (Canada) in the third place game of the 2025 Phil Brown Classic on Sunday, July 6, at Jack Brown Stadium.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the second when they loaded the bases for Nolan Maulding who hit a ground-rule double to score two runs to make it 2-0 before he was brought home on a three-run shot by Bennett Goehner to push the lead out to 5-0.

“We were just attacking the ball, going up there with good approaches and attacking first strikes, first, one, two, three strikes, whatever’s in the zone, go attack it,” Eagles head coach Sam Joseph said. “So we were in attack mode and that’s what happened.”

The Black Sox (23-8) broke through in the top of the fifth when Grayson Berkowits hit a double to make it 5-1 before they added three more runs on five hits and a fielder’s choice to bring their deficit to within one at 5-4. The Black Sox continued to fight back and a single from Jason Morin to make it 5-5 in the sixth. They continued to add on in the inning with three more runs to take an 8-5 lead.

“We fell asleep. We took our foot off the gas pedal, we thought we were going to coast in with this win, 5-0, you can’t do that against good teams like that,” Joseph said. “When you do coast, that’s what happens, good teams make you pay for it and that’s what we did, coasted after that, we thought the game was over and we won and we didn’t. So we gotta figure that part out. I gotta do a better job as a coach to ensure we don’t do that.”

On the mound, the Eagles (10-17) used three pitchers, Braxton Perkins, Bennett Goehner and Brenner Weber. The trio combined to go all seven innings giving up five earned runs on 10 hits while striking out seven hitters and walking two hitters. The Black Sox used two pitchers, Cal Lagace and Cole Pritchard who pitched a complete game giving up zero earned runs on six hits while striking out five hitters and walking three hitters.
